It is true, it all begins with an idea. But where do our ideas come from? For me, they all seem to be spawned by the desire to do more of the things I love. And, one of my greatest loves in life has and, hopefully always will be fishing. Fishing in all its forms, but more recently fly fishing, and fly-fishing for trout in streams and rivers (for the moment anyway) takes the cake.
This trip out to a relatively unknown area of the Kosciuszko National Park in southern mid-western New South Wales, was spawned a year earlier when Charlotte and I took the opportunity for a long weekend break during a warm patch of weather and hit the road in Wildling our beloved third family member and 4x4 Mercedes Sprinter van to explore a new part of the NSW we had never been before. And that’s when our curiosity led us to this spectacular alpine river valley deep within the wilderness. Complete with a fast-flowing, crisp and crystal clear alpine stream, frost hollows, highland copperheads (Austrelaps ramsayi), snow gums (Eucalyptus pauciflora), and an abundance of the chameleon-like alpine grashopper (Kosciuscola tristis) which seems to keep the brown and rainbow trout well fed.
We’d be talking about this trip for sometime and as we were meandering through the windy turns of the Alpine Way from Thredbo to Geehi, the excitement and anticipation began to grow. The weather was perfect, the late January days long and everything was on outside. After a few days chilling at Geehi Flats Campground, swimming, cooking, working, floating down and fishing the Swamoy Plans River the day arrived for us to pack up camp, head out and park ‘Wildling’ up for a week and hike ourselves, our camping gear and food and camera gear into the wilderness for what can only be described as one of the dream come true trips.
